History of Istanbul Technical University
Istanbul Technical University has a long history dating back to the period of Sultan Mustafa III., Ottoman ruler. The university was founded with the name of “House of the Imperial Naval Engineers” in1773 by Baron de Tott, whose origin is Hungarian. The school serving within the shipyard of Golden Horn was training the professionals who draw maps and prepare marine and ship building projects.
Although it was not known clearly, the person who had the title of the school’s first “head teacher” was Algerian Seyyid Hasan Teacher. Algerian Seyyid Hasan Teacher knew more than one language and was trained in the field of ship engineering. It is claimed that Seyyid Hasan Teacher provided lots of books to the library of the school. Baron de Tott, the founder of the university, also worked in the institution.
Selim III, the ruler of that era, gave importance to the school, therefore, he sent several books for the library of the school from Topkapı Palace and also he gave the order to make a printing press done and to buy many educational tools.
In 1847, the architecture courses were added to the curriculum of the school and the most important architects of the Ottoman Empire began to be cultivated. In 1909, civil engineers and architects began to be graduated while the institution was training the military personnel until that day.
After the proclamation of the Republic, curricula were renewed and the university continued training in the field of architecture, railway, road and construction. The school’s name was called as “Engineer School” in that time.
In the 1940’s, the school had international academic staffs and was the important position in Turkey and in the world. In 1944, the name of the school was changed to “Istanbul Technical University”.
Today, the university gives education in the field of technical issues and is one of the most important institutes training engineers in the world.
