When walking to the direction of Tophane from the coast side of Beşiktaş District of Istanbul, Inönü Stadium can be seen on the right side, the visitors’ entrance door of Dolmabahçe Palace can be seen on the left side. “Painting and Sculpture Art Museum” the first museum of the country is located in the Dolmabahçe Palace. The museum was opened on September 20, 1937 after leaving the crown prince office to use of the Academy of Fine Arts.
The museum, opened by the order of leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, started to accept visitors depending on today’s Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts. Istanbul Museum of Painting and Sculpture welcomes visitors with a three- storey building and there are special structures that aloow the organization of exhibitions in the garden of the museum.
The first floor of Istanbul Painting and Sculpture Museum is home to exhibitions periodically opened or new ones, while upper floors are home to the artifacts which are placed all time in here. Approximately three thousand one hundred and fifty works are exhibited in the museum. Two thousand five hundred works of collection are original paintings, four hundred works consists of the sculptures.
Every year, painting courses which have been given by faculty members and student of Mimar Sinan University of Fine Arts are opened.
Paintings, exhibited in Istanbul Paintings and Sculpture Museum, are also exhibited in many galleries around the country by the state. The museum, where dozens original paintings of famous foreign artists like Pablo Picasso are exhibited, is open the days, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. also visiting is provided without payment.
